Choose how the light should behave.

Dimming and control are easier to choose when you start with the experience you want. Decide whether the lighting simply switches, dims, tunes white, changes color, or uses a controller—then verify that the lighting, driver, and control method are designed to work together.

“Dimmable” does not mean universally compatible. The control method, lighting type, power architecture, driver family, and installation all need to support the behavior you want.

Start with the behavior. Then match the system.

Instead of starting with a dimmer model or control protocol, narrow the decision in four steps.

Step 01 / Define the Behavior

What do you actually want to control?

The simplest way to narrow the control decision is to describe what you want the finished lighting to do.

Simple Switching

On or off.

If adjustable brightness or color is not required, the system may only need a compatible switching method and constant-voltage power source.

Brightness

Dim a fixed-color white strip.

Brightness dimming can be handled through different architectures. A compatible dimmable driver, low-voltage controller, or integrated solution may be used depending on the system.

Tunable White

Adjust brightness and white tone.

Tunable-white lighting needs compatible multi-channel lighting and control. The controller changes how the available white channels are balanced.

Verify Lighting type, conductor requirements, controller, voltage, and power architecture.
Color / Smart Control

Change color, scenes, or control style.

RGB, RGBW, app-based, wireless, remote, and other controller-based systems can add features beyond standard wall dimming, but the supported behavior depends on the selected lighting and controller.

Verify Lighting channels, controller capability, power, communication method, and system compatibility.
The lighting type limits the controls that make sense. A fixed-color strip cannot become tunable-white or RGB just because a more advanced controller is added. Start with lighting that supports the behavior you want.
Step 02 / Choose the Control Approach

Different controls act in different ways.

You do not need to memorize every protocol before shopping. The useful question is where the control acts and what the selected power and lighting system supports.

Wall Dimming

Phase-cut control.

Some dimmable drivers are designed to work with compatible line-voltage wall dimmers. Terms such as leading-edge, trailing-edge, MLV, ELV, and TRIAC may appear depending on the driver and dimmer.

Dedicated Control

0–10V and other control inputs.

Some driver families provide dedicated control inputs separate from the main power path. These systems require a driver designed for that control method and the appropriate control wiring.

Low-Voltage Control

Controllers on the LED side.

Some systems use a controller between the power source and LED lighting. This is common for multi-channel, tunable-white, RGB, RGBW, wireless, and other controller-based lighting.

Integrated Control

Combine functions when the product supports it.

Some products combine switching, dimming, power conversion, or other control functions into one device. These can simplify a compatible system, but their exact capabilities remain product-specific.

Step 03 / Match the Architecture

Control placement depends on the system.

A control may act before the driver, through dedicated control wiring, or on the low-voltage side of the system. That is why two products labeled “dimmable” may not be interchangeable.

These are general system relationships—not universal wiring instructions.

Line-voltage side A compatible wall dimmer or control acts before a driver designed to respond to that method.

Dedicated control input Separate control wiring communicates with a driver that specifically supports that control method.

Low-voltage side A compatible controller may sit between the power source and the LED lighting.
Do not choose control placement from a generic diagram. The exact arrangement depends on the control method, driver or power supply, controller, lighting type, and product instructions.

Step 04 / Verify Before Buying

Check the exact control combination.

Once the control approach is clear, verify the current specifications for the exact lighting, driver, dimmer, controller, or integrated device you intend to use.

Not every system uses every item below, but these are the compatibility questions worth checking before purchase.
