When an LED system does not behave as expected, avoid changing everything at once. Identify the symptom, verify the basic system requirements, and narrow the problem one part of the system at a time.

Troubleshooting is diagnosis, not guesswork. This guide helps you decide what to check. Exact operating behavior, wiring, protection features, ratings, and compatibility remain product-specific.

Before You Change Anything

Preserve the clues.

A few observations made before changing components can make the problem much easier to isolate.

Describe what is actually wrong.

No light, partial light, dim output, flicker, unexpected shutdown, or incorrect control behavior point toward different parts of the system.

The goal is to narrow the system, not immediately replace a part. If one check changes the symptom, record what changed before moving to the next step.
No Light / Partial / Dim Output

Start with power, voltage, and the connection path.

When light output is missing or weaker than expected, verify the basic electrical requirements before assuming the strip itself is the problem.

First determine how much of the system is affected.

A completely dark system and a problem affecting only one section provide different clues. Note whether the symptom begins at the power source, a branch, a connection, or a particular portion of the lighting.

Confirm that the constant-voltage LED lighting and its power source are rated for the same operating voltage. Do not substitute one system voltage for another.

Compare the connected LED load with the power source selected for the system. Use the actual lighting specification rather than a generic watts-per-foot assumption.

Connections and polarity

Check accessible low-voltage connections against the product instructions. Connector type, conductor count, strip construction, and polarity are product-specific.

Run and feed strategy

If output changes across the run, review the actual strip specification, conductor path, connected load, and feed layout. Do not assume one universal maximum run length for every system.

Flicker / Dimming / Control Response

Verify the compatibility chain.

When the lighting turns on but does not behave correctly, compare the control method with the exact driver, controller, and lighting products in the system.

“Dimmable” is not a complete compatibility specification.

If a driver or power supply stops operating, use its current documentation to determine the model-specific behavior before attempting corrective work.

Review the requirements surrounding the driver.

Protection behavior and fault response are product-specific. Rather than assuming why the unit stopped, verify the system conditions that the product documentation identifies as relevant.

Connected load Compare the actual connected lighting load with the driver's verified capacity and the system's power calculation.
Voltage and compatibility Verify the output voltage, selected lighting voltage, control method, and relevant driver-family specifications.
Installation conditions Compare mounting, environment, enclosure conditions, wiring, and installation requirements with the current product instructions.
Do not open or internally repair a driver based on this guide. If the cause cannot be identified through external, documented checks, stop and use the product documentation, manufacturer support, or a qualified electrical professional.
Connections & Installation

Look closely at what changed during installation.

If a system worked during bench testing but developed a problem after mounting or routing, inspect the physical installation before changing the system architecture.

Inspect the accessible low-voltage path.

  • Polarity: confirm positive and negative conductors remain consistent with product markings.
  • Connectors: verify the connector matches the strip construction, width, and conductor arrangement.
  • Branches and feeds: confirm each intended branch remains connected as designed.
  • Wire routing: inspect accessible wire paths and terminations for anything altered during mounting.
  • Environment: verify that strips, connections, terminations, and power equipment are suitable for the actual location.
  • Mounting: compare the finished installation with the product's mounting and installation requirements.
