LED System Planning Guide

Turn the project into a system.

Good system planning starts before individual products. Define what the space needs, work through the technical requirements in the right order, then use those requirements to choose compatible components.

A project plan is not a shopping cart. The goal is to define what the system actually needs first. Once those requirements are clear, you can compare them against available products, use a builder, or ask for project help.

Start with the project.

Products make more sense after the requirements are clear. Three early decisions establish the context for everything that follows.

What are you trying to light?

Define the space, purpose, lighting effect, approximate length, placement, and what you want the finished result to accomplish.

What conditions will the system face?

Dry, damp, wet, exterior, heat, exposure, access, and mounting conditions can change which products and installation methods are appropriate.

What does the light itself need to do?

Establish the required light output, effect, color, strip type, length, and other lighting characteristics before building the rest of the system around them.

A useful project plan should still make sense even before an exact EMITEVER product is chosen. Product selection is the next step: matching available components to the requirements you already defined.

Each decision narrows the next one. This sequence keeps project requirements, technical decisions, and product selection from getting mixed together too early.

This is a planning sequence, not a wiring diagram. It describes the order in which project decisions should be considered. Physical component relationships depend on the selected control method, power architecture, products, and installation instructions.

Planning becomes easier when each stage answers a specific question instead of trying to solve the whole system at once.

Application

What should the finished lighting accomplish?

  • Identify the space or object being illuminated.
  • Define the intended task, accent, ambient, or architectural effect.
  • Estimate the illuminated length and intended placement.
  • Consider how visible or concealed the light source should be.

Environment

What conditions must the complete system tolerate?

  • Determine whether the location is dry, damp, wet, exterior, or otherwise exposed.
  • Consider moisture, heat, dust, physical exposure, and access.
  • Think about the environment of every component, not only the LED strip.
  • Identify any difficult-to-service locations before choosing equipment.

Lighting Requirements

What kind of LED lighting produces the intended result?

  • Choose the required light output and visual effect.
  • Define white-light, tunable-white, or multi-color needs.
  • Consider CCT, CRI, COB or SMD construction, and strip characteristics where relevant.
  • Use the actual selected strip specifications for later power planning.

Voltage

What voltage architecture does the selected lighting require?

  • Confirm the rated operating voltage of the selected LED lighting.
  • Use a constant-voltage power source with the same rated output voltage.
  • Do not choose voltage from one universal distance rule.
  • Consider voltage, run conditions, power density, and the actual product together.

Power Requirements

How much electrical capacity does the connected lighting require?

  • Use the selected strip's actual wattage specification.
  • Calculate the connected LED load from the planned installation.
  • Apply the current EMITEVER power-sizing rule when choosing the power source.
  • Account for separate branches or power sources where the system requires them.

Control

How should the finished lighting switch, dim, tune, or respond?

  • Decide whether simple on/off operation is enough.
  • Define whether wall dimming, controller-based control, tunable white, or multi-color behavior is required.
  • Choose compatible control architecture before finalizing the power components.
  • Verify exact product compatibility rather than assuming every dimmable component works together.

Installation Requirements

What does the physical space require before installation begins?

  • Plan component locations, mounting surfaces, access points, and any clearances the installation requires.
  • Identify practical wire paths, connection locations, feed points, and service access.
  • Confirm that connections and power components are appropriate for their environment.
  • Consider how the complete system can be tested before final mounting or concealment.
